  • Working with NZTE

    Kia ora!

Whether you’re growing a business internationally, or looking to make smart investment decisions, we’ll give you the right support every step of the way.

    How we work with you

We know the challenges that New Zealand businesses face when growing internationally, so our way of working is all about making it easier for you to achieve your goals.

We always start by learning about you - understanding your strengths, what you want to achieve and what might be getting in the way, so we can match our support to your needs.

We’re here to help you get the right focus and information at the right time in your exporting journey, whether you need practical help to get started, a deep partnership to develop a fully global business, or anywhere in between.

Find out more about how we work with our customers below.

    Start customers

If you want to get a better understanding of exporting, and how to take the first step, we can support you as a Start customer. We help our Start customers by sharing practical tools and knowledge to help you learn and navigate your export journey, and by helping you connect to other agencies and organisations such as our Regional Business Partners, that can help you grow your business.

To work with us as a Start customer:

    • your business must be a registered New Zealand business
    • you need to supply basic business information - including your company name, address, product or service sector, and a contact person and email address
    • preferably be able to show some evidence of sales, either here or overseas.

Find out more about what we offer to Start customers.

Contact us to begin working with NZTE as a Start customer.

    Build customers

As a Build customer, your customer manager will connect you with NZTE support and services to help you prepare for your next step up in exporting.
Whether it’s developing the know-how to tackle new markets, or building your core capability, we’ll help you get to where you need to be.

To work with us as a Build customer, you need to complete our 10-minute Business Assessment form, which includes information about your company, your exporting history and how ready you are for international markets. We use this to understand your track record in New Zealand and/or overseas, your management team’s experience, and how closely you want to work with us (including how much information you’re willing to share).

Depending on where you’re at and what you need, we’ll either begin working with you as a Build customer, or we’ll help you connect to other agencies and organisations such as our Regional Business Partners, that can help you grow your business.

    Focus customers

If you’re already exporting, and have a planned and committed approach to accelerating your international growth, you may benefit from working with us as a Focus customer.

As a Focus customer, you’ll work with a customer manager who partners with you, and taps into our global team to help you achieve your international growth goals. You’ll receive priority support from NZTE, in New Zealand and around the world.

We’ve worked out that we invest, on average, $150,000 per annum in our Focus customers. In return, to become a Focus customer you need to show us that you’re ready to scale internationally, by meeting the following requirements.

These aren’t precise criteria, but they’re important indicators of where you’re at in your international growth journey. When looking at potential Focus customers, we’ll consider your existing business situation along with your potential future growth, and the impact for New Zealand as well as for your own business.

    • You need to be willing to engage closely with us, and share a high level of information. This includes sharing your overall business plan, as well as your domestic and international revenue for the last three years. You also need to commit senior leadership time to working with NZTE, and be willing to partner with us on a detailed plan for your international growth.
    • You need to clearly show growth potential on a scale that benefits New Zealand. We measure these potential benefits to New Zealand in terms of new jobs, increased tax flows, contribution to GDP, as well as increased supplier spend and ongoing R&D activities in New Zealand.
    • You need to show capability and capacity for international growth. This includes a solid revenue base (usually at least $3 million) and sufficient people and resources to make your planned growth happen. Other indicators include high revenue per FTE or an easily scalable business model. You also need to have the ability to fund your growth, whether from a suitable debt to asset ratio, or through capital backing and investors that support your plans.
    • You need to demonstrate ambition for international growth. This includes putting in the time and resources of your senior management team, having strategic plans, visiting target markets regularly, and committing to R&D and business expansion – all visible signs that you’re committed to speeding up your growth.
    • You need to have evidence of international performance. This includes showing how your international revenue has tracked against your projections, and how you’re gearing up for proposed growth, as well as proof of market validation and international customer demand for what you’re offering.

    We’ll also take into account:

    • whether your business is built around value-added, knowledge-intensive or premium products and services – generally, we can add more value to these businesses than we can for businesses based around commodity trading.
    • wider factors related to your industry or type of business – for instance, in lieu of sales, we might consider customer acquisition rates for early-stage digital businesses, or asset base and future revenue potential for Māori businesses.

Find out more about what we offer to Focus customers.

Most exporters work with us as Build customers first. If you think you’re ready to work with us and potentially become a Focus customer, please contact us to find out more.

    Coalitions

As well as working with individual companies, we also help like-minded businesses to connect and build strategies to grow internationally together, through formal coalitions.

Just as with our individual customers, we’ll always start by understanding what stage your partnership is at, what you need, and how we might be able to help.
Once we know your coalition well, we can provide the same services and support that we’d offer to an individual Build or Focus customer with similar needs.

    • If you’re already exporting, but looking to team up with others as a go-to-market coalition, we’re likely to work with you as a Build coalition to help you form agreements and a shared plan with other businesses.
    • If you’ve already formed a group of two or more businesses to achieve international growth, and; you have an emerging shared purpose; objectives; reasonable international opportunities; commitment from those involved to work closely with us and each other – then you may benefit from working with us as a Focus coalition. Much the same as an individual Focus customer.

If you’d like to learn more about how we work with coalitions, please contact us.

    Māori businesses

We understand that Māori business may have different factors driving their commercial and export activity and growth. This is why we have a team dedicated to working with Māori customers, who understand the Māori dynamic and business models, know about the governance models of multiple ownership, and have a shared understanding of nga kawa me nga tikanga Māori.

As with all customers, the way we work with Māori businesses always starts with learning about who you are and what you want to achieve, so that we can match our support to your needs. This includes understanding the best way to partner with you, whether you’re an individual business or a collectively owned Māori entity.

Depending on where you are at on your exporting journey, you might benefit from working with us as either a Build or Focus customer, where you’ll have access to services and support to help you achieve your goals, including our Te Aukaha investment workshops which are tailored for Māori businesses. Alongside our usual criteria, we’ll also take into account your asset base and potential future revenue.

If you’d like to learn more about how we work with Māori businesses, please contact us.
