About Us

Better by Design's sole purpose is to help New Zealand businesses succeed. Our programmes are built on the principle that design strategies and processes can be applied to businesses to improve the bottom line.

Better by Design is a specialist group within New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, New Zealand's national economic development agency.

Better by Design is a catalyst. Our programmes connect ambitious companies with leading business experts and design practitioners. The Design 360, part of our Design Integration Programme, provides an independent assessment of a company's fundamental strengths and weaknesses, identifies opportunities, and recommends a plan of action for improvement.

We also advocate design's value through events such as leadership conferences.

We have strong and vital links with the private sector.  Better by Design's Advisory Board, made up of seven of New Zealand's foremost design practitioners and business leaders, provides counsel and direction. Our team of in-house specialists have significant private sector experience. Our Design 360 company assessments are undertaken by nationally-recognised experts in auditing, business improvement and design specialties.

Better by Design was the 2007 winner of the Vero Excellence in Business Export Support Award.

How it all started

In 2003 a Design Taskforce, consisting of designers, academics and business leaders, developed a strategy that would boost New Zealand's economic growth through the better use of design

The Design Taskforce's report, Success by Design, recommended ways New Zealand businesses could become more design-capable. In 2004 a Better by Design team was established to deliver the recommended programme to export-focused businesses and the design community.
